Changing Mandate
|
|
It's a great platform and there are tons of awesome people working in development there that want to tell good stories, but they're hindered by allegiance to a corporate algorithm that doesn't allow them to take as many risks.
|
The entire executive team I was working under was let go, and their projects largely died with them.

No Longer Magical But Still Great
|
|
- In general, your colleagues are going to be really good people, with excellent skills
- Dissent, and candor are encouraged
- If you don't want to play the golden handcuffs / RSU game, Netflix's "one big base pay" can be an attractive option
- Considered as a "cool" place to work at by most outsiders
|
- Becoming less differentiated from other big tech firms, sold as becoming "grown up"
- "Levels" were introduced to depress pay for, and encourage voluntary attrition among long tenured engineers
- Information access is getting more, and more closed off
- "Freedom and responsibility" got abused by some, leading to it being replaced by "people over process"

Worthwhile Read - My experience in TA org

I landed (what I thought, anyway) my dream job within TA. I believed I had become part of a team that fosters mutual growth, but it didn't take long for me to realize my misconception. There appeared to be a struggle in power dynamics within the team, seemingly influenced by jealousy.
During my onboarding process, I virtually met the rest of my team to establish rapport with them. However, during my initial interaction, a team member displayed condescending and rude behavior, even questioning our manager's decision to hire me. Although their attitude caught me off guard, I chose to give them the benefit of the doubt and assumed that perhaps they were having a rough day. Unfortunately, over time, their behavior worsened, and it became evident that they harbored animosity towards me; until now, I remain unaware of the reason behind it.
During a three-month period, our manager assigned me as a project manager for several projects and designated me as the lead in a team formed to support Netflix's gaming teams. As my responsibilities expanded, I began to feel increasingly disconnected from my team.
I experienced a significant level of hostility towards me, which continued to escalate over time. The bullying became so severe that I reported it multiple times to my manager, who characterized the individuals involved as "jealous." My manager assured me that she would take care of it. I anticipated that the hostility would cease at that point, but unfortunately, it persisted and the situation deteriorated.
I started to observe patterns in their behavior, such as ignoring me during meetings, deleting parts of my contributions in shared Google Documents, and at one point, claiming full credit for outputs on shared assignments. On one occasion, a team member who wasn't my manager or leader took me aside for a one-on-one discussion and insinuated that I was dishonest about my contributions and lacked dedication to my work. I felt deeply disrespected by this encounter. Additionally, this individual accessed our Applicant Tracking System (ATS) and wrongfully reassigned ownership of a candidate I had recruited. In response, I reached out to my manager and requested their involvement in the email thread to prevent any further conflicts. I perceived the treatment from this particular team member as belittling, only to realize that similar dynamics were at play among other closely collaborating individuals within the team.
The impact on my mental health prompted me to take the step of filing a formal complaint against the team with our HR director.
For weeks, I didn't receive any response from the HR director. Eventually, a meeting was arranged many weeks later. In the meeting, I shared my experiences and expressed concerns about the potential impact on my job security. The director reassured me that everything would be fine. After several more weeks passed without any communication, I followed up for an update. The following week, to my surprise, I was let go early Monday morning. My manager was present during the meeting and cited subpar performance as the reason, despite previously receiving positive reviews.
I felt frustrated by the situation. Netflix emphasizes the critical importance of treating all employees equally and respectfully and ensuring a safe work environment for everyone. They have explicitly stated their zero-tolerance policy towards any form of harassment or discrimination. When I reported my experiences, along with evidence of harassment and bullying by certain individuals within my team, I expected to be shielded based on these principles.
In my view, it seems like their attention wasn't directed toward resolving the issue at hand, which centered on the unprofessional conduct of the team. It felt (to me) as though it was easier for them to remove one person from the team rather than address the unprofessional behavior displayed by several colleagues on the team.
It was a deeply embarrassing experience, to say the least, as I was left feeling undeserving of the outcome. I found myself caught in what seemed to be a hostile workplace environment. What made it even more humiliating was the knowledge that a high-level summary of my termination would be circulated throughout the entire company - an act I had witnessed being done to others who were previously let go from Netflix.
